2004 Women's Regatta J/120 Pictures
Bayview Yacht Club's Women's Invitational Cup -- All Boats are Winners
Detroit, Michigan Bayview Yacht Club's first annual Women's Invitational Cup was a huge success on Lake St. Clair last September 26th! With only 4 weeks of planning, there were 14 boats with all women racers - what a way to launch an event! The center of the race was around a match race for the two J120’s, Merlin skippered by Kathy Stevens and Lynn Kotwicki and Carinthia skippered by Colleen Flanagan.
The first race was a windward/leeward, 6 legs for the J120 class, and 4 legs for the PHRF and JAM classes. What a sight to see with so many spectator boats following the boats to the first mark and taking pictures! The first race between Merlin and Carinthia changed two times with Merlin winning the start and Carinthia beating her to the first mark. Later Merlin overtook Carinthia on a downwind leg to get the win.
The second race was a fun one... Half-mile W/L/W legs for the J120s (not much time to pack that kite!), one windward leg for PHRF & JAM, with the last leg for all boats being a reach down the Detroit River for a finish in front of Bayview Yacht Club. Again the race was a repeat of the first with Carinthia getting to the upwind mark first with Merlin again overtaking them on the next downwind leg. With the finish down the river Merlin went down the left side and Carinthia down the right with Merlin holding them off to the end.
After the races, competitors were invited to Bayview Yacht Club for the awards party and slideshow. All participants and owners received event t-shirts, and flags were given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each class. Stay tuned...planning is underway for the 2nd Annual Bayview Yacht Club Women's Invitational Cup with many more ladies expected to participate. |
